What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention from your dentist. We often hear patients say they weren’t sure whether their situation was a dental
emergency.
It’s always best to call us for advice, but here are some of the most common dental emergencies and what to do until you reach our Torrance office:
- Knocked-out tooth — Make sure not to touch the tooth’s roots; try to place it back in its socket or store it inside your cheek.
- Broken or chipped tooth — Gather any pieces and bring them to your appointment if possible. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Significant facial swelling — Apply a cold compress to your face. Take over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate any discomfort.
- Severe tooth pain — Take over-the-counter pain relievers and apply an ice pack to your face.
- Lost filling or restoration — Replace your filling or restoration using dental wax or sugarless gum to hold it in place.
- Soft tissue injury — Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. If you’re bleeding severely, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
