Are you scheduled for a CEREC crown procedure? Maybe you’ve already had your procedure and are interested in learning about CEREC crown aftercare. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ll go over everything you need to know to take care of your CEREC restoration.

Let’s cover:

  • CEREC crown aftercare
  • CEREC crown maintenance
  • Signs of post-op problems
  • Crown longevity

Immediate Post-Op Instructions

The first few days after your CEREC crown procedure are important as the healing process is in full swing. There are some critical things to know, including what’s safe to eat and how long you should avoid chewing around the area where your new crown lives.

Foods to avoid in the first 24 hours while the adhering material settles:

  • Sticky food that might dislodge the crown
  • Ice chips
  • Hard foods
  • Staining foods like coffee or wine

In fact, chewing on that side of the mouth for that first day should be avoided. Be mindful of what you’re eating and how you’re chewing during this period of time, and you’ll be good to go.

Oral Hygiene Routines

Immediately after your CEREC crown procedure, you can start brushing twice a day. You should avoid flossing around the crown restoration for a couple of days. After that, be sure to floss once a day. Crowns do decay, especially along the gum line of the abutment tooth, making it important to practice good oral hygiene.

If you grind your teeth at night, consider talking to your dentist about getting a nightguard so that you don’t wear down your crown.

Possible Signs of Trouble

It’s normal to experience some discomfort after a crown placement. Discomfort often improves after a few days or several weeks at the most. It’s also normal for a new crown to feel strange as you adjust to the feel of it. However, in some cases, you may need your dentist to adjust the crown to fit your mouth better. If your bite feels off after a week, call your dentist. It might be time for an adjustment.

Some other signs of trouble might include:

  • The crown feels loose.
  • There’s gum irritation, like redness, swelling, or tenderness.
  • Food keeps getting trapped around the new crown.
  • You experience ongoing pain after a couple of weeks.

If you have any questions or feel that something isn’t right with your new crown, give your dentist a call immediately!

Longevity Expectations

CEREC crowns typically last 10-15 years with proper care. One study showed an 85.7 percent survival rate at 10 years. Dentists will generally arrange regular follow-up visits to monitor your crown condition with x-rays and make any necessary occlusal adjustments.

For CEREC crown maintenance, practice good oral hygiene: brush and floss every day, avoid hard foods, and don’t chew on ice or pens. These practices will make your CEREC crown last longer and prevent complications.
